To use Twitter properly, at least for marketing purposes, you need a cohesive, goal orientated strategy. You need rules and targets. You need focus and discipline…
… You also need to play the game!
Those that never retweet, that have are following thousands and only have a few posts and especially those just peddling affiliate links just aren’t playing the game!
On that note, I recommend you read this: It’s About Intent: Affiliate Links in Twitter
For me it’s simply bums on seats. My conversations are anyone who followers me, nothing more, nothing less. No products to push, no ulterior motives, nothing to sell. The goal is, as the domain suggests, getting a million people to follow me – just because I want a million followers. The goal for my ‘real’ Twitter is – nothing actually. Quite happy to follow some tech streams and a few of my favourite authors and the more intelligent ‘celebrities’ like Stephen Fry.
Focus and disipline. Oh yes, I need a serious kick up the backside and for me, hopefully, this is it. I will post every day and explore reliable ways to promote the Twitter until I hit the magic number.
Rules: Only one rule for me, really, for the most part I’ll only follow back those playing the game.
Today’s strategy? Got year end taxes to sort and a couple of websites to fix up, so unless I get time later I’ll just follow more Thesis users or maybe pick a topic at random and follow that!
Added myself to Twittercounter. They also have an option for being a featured user. Not worthwhile to me for this site as I’m not monetising it but I could see it recovering the costs for some users. Rates are in the region of $150 for 50,000 page views, rising to $2,500 for a million (about a month). Shattershot approach though. Depends what you are aiming for, I guess.
